La poesía formó parte de su vida desde edad temprana.
Su admiración por grandes poetas de Suramérica, como Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni, Juana de Ibarbourou y Delmira Agustini, se dio a conocer a temprana edad. Ellas la inspiraron a seguir los pasos de la poesía, sin embargo, ella misma reconoció que no fueron una influencia precisa en su obra, en su forma de comunicarse.
Su obra poética estuvo cargada de nostalgia y melancolía. Describió temas intensos, viscerales e íntimos, como la muerte, el amor, el dolor y la ausencia. En su poesía se lee ese eterno dolor de lo que se anhela y no se consigue, de lo que nunca podrá ser.
Recibió varios reconocimientos por su poesía, como la Medalla Gran Orden del Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia y el Premio Nacional de Poesía. En su honor se creó Premio nacional de Poesía Meira Delmar, cuya primera entrega se efectuó en 2008.
Falleció el 18 de marzo de 2009.
